Philadelphia struck 27,760 half dimes in 1801, one of the lower mintages in the Draped Bust series and a 30% decline from the 1800 output. The reduced production reflected the Mint's chronic difficulty securing silver bullion and the competing demands of other denominations on the facility's limited press capacity. Silver dollars, half dollars, dimes, and half dimes all shared the same presses and the same bullion supply, and any year's output depended on how the Mint chose to allocate resources.
The design continues unchanged from 1800: Robert Scot's Draped Bust obverse with thirteen stars, paired with the Heraldic Eagle reverse introduced the previous year. No denomination marking appeared anywhere on the coin, continuing the minimalist approach that the Mint had used since 1794. Users were expected to recognize a half dime by sight, a reasonable assumption in 1801 when the denomination was familiar enough to be handled by memory.
The 1801 half dime is scarcer than the 1800 and commands a corresponding premium. Most surviving examples are in lower circulated grades, consistent with the broader Draped Bust series. Finding a problem-free 1801 in Very Fine or better requires patience and a willingness to pay the semi-key price. Very Fine represents the realistic upper limit for most collectors; Extremely Fine examples are scarce, and Uncirculated coins are rare and expensive.
