The 1803 Large 8 half dime uses a date punch where the numeral 8 is taller and bolder than on the Small 8 variety from the same year. The two 8 styles reflect different numeral punches in the Mint's inventory, and the specific punch chosen for each die determined whether the resulting coin would be classified as Large 8 or Small 8. The Large 8 accounts for a portion of the year's production and is collected as a distinct variety.
The 1803 had a combined mintage of 37,850 coins across both varieties. The year was notable for the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the territorial size of the United States overnight. None of the Louisiana Purchase money changed hands in half dimes (the $15 million transaction was paid in gold and bonds), but the half dimes struck in 1803 circulated in a country that was suddenly much larger than it had been at the start of the year.
Both 1803 half dime varieties are scarce. The Large 8 is available in circulated grades but requires active searching. Uncirculated examples are rare and command strong premiums. A collector pursuing the complete 1803 variety set needs both the Large 8 and the Small 8, both of which present challenges in higher grades.
