The 1837 Seated Liberty half dime is the first year of a design that would dominate American silver coinage for the next thirty-six years. Christian Gobrecht created it, adapting the seated figure of Liberty he had first developed for the 1836 Gobrecht silver dollar. Liberty sits on a rock, holding a pole topped with a liberty cap in her left hand and a shield with the word LIBERTY inscribed across it in her right. Thirteen stars from the previous Capped Bust design are absent. The obverse carries no stars at all, just the seated figure, the date beneath, and an empty field. The reverse shows a wreath enclosing HALF DIME and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border.
The Large Date variety uses the taller numeral punches for the date. The distinction from the Small Date version is subtle but consistent: the digits on Large Date coins are more prominent and occupy more vertical space in the exergue beneath Liberty. The Mint used multiple die pairs during the first year of production, and the punch selection varied across dies, creating the two recognized date varieties.
The 1837 No Stars half dime is a two-year type coin (1837-1838). The stars would be added to the obverse in 1838, making the No Stars subtype one of the shortest in the Seated Liberty series. Type collectors need at least one example to represent the design's original form, and the 1837 Large Date is a common choice. Surviving examples are available in circulated grades, though Uncirculated pieces command premiums because of the subtype's limited production window.
