About this coinHistory

The 1840 With Drapery half dime is the first year of the Stars Obverse With Drapery subtype, which would dominate Seated Liberty half dime production from mid-1840 through 1859. The drapery addition modified Liberty's left elbow, adding a visible cloth fold that softened the figure's pose. Gobrecht made the change to refine the design's aesthetic character, and the modification appeared simultaneously across multiple Seated Liberty denominations.

Identifying the Drapery subtype is straightforward once you know where to look. Liberty's left elbow, where the figure's body meets the seat, shows a distinct fold of cloth on Drapery coins and a clean angular joint on No Drapery coins. The distinction is visible without magnification on most well-preserved examples.

The 1840 With Drapery is the starting point for a nineteen-year run of the subtype. Collectors who pursue the full Seated Liberty half dime series by type include this coin as the first Drapery example, and type collectors who want a single Drapery representative often choose one of the common mid-series dates instead. As the initial Drapery year, 1840 has transitional significance that some collectors value for its place in the design history.
