1842 saw the Philadelphia Mint deliver 815,000 half dimes, a reduced output from the previous year but still comfortably within normal production range. The design continues unchanged. Die varieties exist but none are dramatic enough to command significant premiums. The Tyler administration was navigating its own political isolation (Tyler had been expelled from the Whig Party in 1841) and attempting to govern with neither major party's support.
The 1842 is a common date in circulated grades. Uncirculated examples are available, though they become scarcer in higher grades. A problem-free Very Fine with even toning represents the date at a moderate price.
