About this coinHistory

Mintage for 1843 reached 1,165,000 half dimes at Philadelphia, a return to higher production levels after the 1842 reduction. The year was dominated by the annexation debate over Texas, which had declared independence from Mexico in 1836 and was seeking admission to the United States. The political controversy over annexation would continue through the following year, eventually contributing to the Mexican-American War. The half dime circulated through the national debate without commentary.

The 1843 is a common date in the Seated Liberty half dime series. Circulated examples are plentiful, and Uncirculated coins are available through normal market channels. A well-struck example with original toning in Very Fine or better is a solid representative of the mid-1840s Philadelphia production.
