About this coinHistory

The 1852-O half dime had a mintage of 260,000 coins, placing it among the scarcer New Orleans dates of the early 1850s. The semi-key status reflects both the lower mintage and the typical survival pattern of mid-century branch mint silver, which tended to circulate heavily and wear significantly before being set aside. Most surviving 1852-O half dimes are in lower circulated grades, and higher-grade examples command meaningful premiums.

The coin is one of the dates that makes a complete New Orleans Seated Liberty half dime set a genuine challenge. Collectors pursuing the full date-and-mintmark run face the 1852-O along with the 1844-O, 1853-O No Arrows, and other branch mint scarcities that sustain the New Orleans sub-collection as a distinctive collecting target.
