About this coinHistory

Philadelphia produced 1,750,000 Arrows half dimes in 1855, the final year of the Arrows subtype. The arrows would be removed from the design in 1856, with the coin returning to the pre-Arrows appearance but retaining the lighter 1.24-gram weight. The Arrows had served their purpose as a visible indicator during the transition period, and by 1856 the public was accustomed to the new standard and no longer needed the explicit marker.

The 1855 Arrows is a common date in all grades and is one of two Arrows dates that collectors can easily acquire (alongside the 1853 Arrows). The 1854 and 1855 Arrows dates complete the three-year Arrows subtype, with 1853 as the initial year and 1855 as the terminal. Collectors building a complete Arrows set need all three dates from at least one mint.
