About this coinHistory

Philadelphia produced 3,500,000 half dimes in 1858, continuing high-volume production through the Panic of 1857's aftermath. The year also produced a notable variety: the 1858 Over Inverted Date, where an upside-down date was punched into the die and then corrected. The standard 1858 is common in all grades and represents the Stars Obverse With Drapery subtype at a moderate price.

Die varieties exist within the year, and specialists track them under the Valentine or other half dime reference systems. For date collectors, the standard 1858 is an easy acquisition, and the Over Inverted Date variety (cataloged separately) provides an additional collector target for those who pursue die varieties.
