About this coinHistory

New Orleans produced 560,000 half dimes in 1859, the final year of the Stars Obverse With Drapery subtype at the branch mint. The 1859-O is the last Stars Obverse New Orleans half dime, a terminal-year branch mint issue that pairs with the 1859 Philadelphia coin as the final two Stars Obverse half dimes of the series. The O mintmark appears on the reverse.

Surviving 1859-O half dimes are available in circulated grades at moderate prices. The terminal-year status gives the coin additional collector interest as the final Stars Obverse New Orleans issue, though the date is not rare enough to command major premiums.
