New Orleans struck 1,060,000 half dimes in 1860, the first Legend Obverse branch mint issue. The O mintmark appears on the reverse below the wreath. The 1860-O is a common Legend Obverse branch mint date, available in circulated grades at moderate prices.
The 1860-O is also the last half dime struck at New Orleans for three years. The Civil War would begin in April 1861, and the New Orleans Mint would fall into Confederate hands in early 1861 before Union forces recaptured the city in 1862. No New Orleans half dimes were struck from 1861 through 1875, making the 1860-O the terminal New Orleans half dime for the pre-war era.
