About this coinHistory

The 1861 1 Over 0 half dime shows a 1 punched over a 0 in the final digit of the date. The Mint reused an 1860 die, updating the date by overpunching the new numeral. Traces of the underlying 0 are visible beneath the 1 on well-preserved examples, creating a doubled impression that specialists can identify under magnification.

The variety is one of the few Seated Liberty half dime overdates from the 1860s. The 1861 date had a large enough mintage that multiple dies were used during production, and at least one of them was repurposed from an 1860 die. Overdate cataloging for half dimes is less developed than for larger denominations, but the 1861 1/0 is recognized by major grading services and carries a premium over the standard 1861.

Identification requires examining the final digit of the date under magnification. The underlying 0 appears as a curved shadow within or beneath the 1. On heavily worn coins, the overdate can be ambiguous. Certification provides the most reliable attribution.
