About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 90,000 half dimes in 1864, a modest figure that makes the 1864-S a semi-key branch mint issue. The coin is less common than the 1863-S and carries a corresponding premium. Unlike the Philadelphia mid-1860s half dimes, which were effectively hoard pieces from birth, the San Francisco coins entered circulation and wore in the course of normal commerce. Surviving 1864-S half dimes span a wider grade range as a result, with well-worn examples more common than for the Philadelphia counterparts.

The S mintmark appears on the reverse. Circulated examples are available with some searching, and higher-grade coins command semi-key premiums. The 1864-S is one of several Civil War-era San Francisco half dimes that collectors pursue as a distinct sub-group within the broader Seated Liberty series.
