About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 120,000 half dimes in 1867, continuing the steady western branch mint production. The 1867-S is a regular-date issue in the market, available at moderate prices in circulated grades. Western commerce was running on silver while the East was still largely using fractional currency notes and waiting for silver to return to broader circulation.

The 1867-S is the last San Francisco half dime to share a year with an extremely rare Philadelphia counterpart. Beginning in 1868, Philadelphia production would begin returning to more normal levels, though branch mint and Philadelphia mintages would not fully rebalance until the early 1870s.
