About this coinHistory

Mintage for 1869 reached 208,000 half dimes at Philadelphia, continuing the recovery from the Civil War lows. The semi-key status still applies because production remained below pre-war levels, but the 1869 is more available than the 1863-1867 key dates. The transcontinental railroad was completed at Promontory Summit, Utah, that May, connecting the eastern and western economies in a way that would accelerate the national integration that had been slowly happening since the end of the Civil War.

The 1869 is a moderate semi-key in the Seated Liberty half dime series. Surviving examples are available with moderate effort, and Uncirculated coins can be found for collectors willing to pay the premium. The coin sits in the transitional zone between the wartime rarities and the more common dates of the early 1870s.
