Philadelphia produced 535,000 half dimes in 1870, a recovery to more normal production levels after the Civil War and early Reconstruction shortages. The return to larger mintages reflected the gradual re-emergence of silver coinage in eastern commerce and the Mint's confidence that newly produced half dimes would actually circulate rather than disappear into hoards.
The 1870 is a common date in the Seated Liberty half dime series and is available to collectors at moderate prices. Uncirculated examples exist in reasonable numbers. The year also produced the famous 1870-S half dime (classified here as a key date), which is collected as one of the most remarkable rarities in American numismatics.
