About this coinHistory

Philadelphia produced 2,947,000 half dimes in 1872, one of the higher mintages of the series. The denomination was fully restored to normal commerce, and the Mint was producing half dimes in quantities reminiscent of the pre-war decades. Grant was reelected in November 1872, defeating Horace Greeley, who died shortly after the election.

The 1872 is a common date in all grades. Uncirculated examples are plentiful for Seated Liberty standards, and type collectors often choose the 1872 as an affordable Legend Obverse representative. The year also produced two San Francisco mintmark varieties that collectors track separately.
