About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 324,000 half dimes in 1873, the final year of branch mint half dime production. The 1873-S is the last S-mintmark half dime, pairing with the 1873 Philadelphia issue as the final two half dimes of the series. The S mintmark appears on the reverse.

Surviving examples are available in circulated grades at moderate prices. As a final-year branch mint issue, the 1873-S carries terminal-year significance that makes it a target for collectors completing the full Seated Liberty half dime date-and-mintmark set. After 1873, the half dime denomination ceased to exist, and no mint would ever produce another.
