About this coinHistory

Philadelphia's 1907 Barber half closed at 2,598,575 circulation pieces, a middle-of-the-pack output that sat comfortably between the lower 1906 figure and the much higher mintages that defined the late-decade run. The issue carries no mintmark, with the area above the eagle's tail feathers on the reverse left clear, as is standard for the parent Mint. The 1907 entered commerce alongside three branch-mint companions in only the second year of full four-mint Barber half production: Denver's 3,856,000-piece run, New Orleans's 3,946,600-piece total, and San Francisco's lower 1,250,000-piece output. The 1907 itself drew no particular collector attention at the time of striking and shows none of the condition-rarity profile that elevates 1904-S or the 1913 through 1915 Philadelphia trio.

Strike on the 1907 generally runs clean by Barber half standards. Liberty's hair detail above the ear and the wreath leaves on the cap render with adequate definition for grading, and the eagle's leg feathers carry full separation on most well-struck examples. The LIBERTY headband on the obverse functions as the standard grade indicator, with the letters L and I wearing first; full presence of LIBERTY supports an AU45 or finer assignment. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations cluster through the circulated range from Good through AU58, with a workable shelf through MS63 and a thinning population above MS64. Authentication is routine and inexpensive: 12.50 g weight, 30.6 mm diameter, reeded edge, with no documented counterfeit pattern for the date. Cherrypickers' Guide attributes no major varieties for the issue, and standard die-pair output applies throughout.

The 1907 sits firmly in the common-date tier of Barber halves. Year-set and type-set collectors absorb most of the supply at routine prices, with the date functioning as a typical Philadelphia anchor for collectors assembling a 1907 four-mint set across the P, D, O, and S issues. A realistic acquisition path runs from a problem-free XF45 through an MS63 or MS64 certified example, with prices tracking the silver bullion floor plus a modest numismatic premium through the mid-Mint State range. Above MS65 the supply thins enough that competitive registry-set pricing applies.
