About this coinHistory

The 1907-D Barber half is the second-year Denver output for the half-dollar denomination, following the inaugural 1906-D that opened the facility's half-dollar production. The mint struck 3,856,000 1907-D halves, a modest pullback from the 4,028,000 first-year run but still a substantial second-year showing that confirmed the Denver branch as a serious contributor to the four-mint Barber half lineup. The D mintmark sits above the eagle's tail feathers on the reverse in the standard Barber-half location. The 1907-D fell into commerce alongside Philadelphia's 2,598,575-piece run, the 3,946,600-piece New Orleans output, and the smaller 1,250,000-piece San Francisco total.

Strike quality on the 1907-D continued the crisp work that defined the Denver facility's first-year output. The dies were still relatively young by branch-mint standards, and Liberty's hair detail above the ear, the wreath leaves on the cap, and the eagle's leg feathers carry strong definition on most well-struck examples. The LIBERTY headband reads cleanly through the AU grades. PCGS and NGC populations populate the date well through the circulated range and through the mid-Mint State levels, with the usual thinning shelf above MS64 where bag-mark contact begins to limit truly gem-level survivors. Authentication runs the standard checks: 12.50 g weight, 30.6 mm diameter, reeded edge. The added-D mintmark deception is more of a concern for high-premium S-mint Barber halves than for a routine Denver issue like the 1907-D, but a careful eye on the punch position and font is worth running for any premium-grade purchase. Cherrypickers' Guide attributes no major varieties for the date.

The 1907-D sits firmly in the common-date tier of Barber halves on raw mintage grounds and trades at moderate premiums above silver melt across the circulated range. Year-set and type-set collectors absorb most of the supply, with the date also serving as the Denver anchor in a 1907 four-mint set that captures the second year of the facility's half-dollar production. The strike-quality advantage relative to other 1907 branch issues makes a certified MS63 or MS64 a satisfying choice for collectors who want a sharply struck Denver representative.
