About this coinHistory

Philadelphia's 1908 Barber half came out at 1,354,000 circulation pieces, a modest output that ran well below the surrounding Philadelphia totals of 2,598,575 in 1907 and 2,368,650 in 1909. The issue carries no mintmark, with the space above the eagle's tail feathers on the reverse left clear. The 1908 entered commerce alongside three substantial branch-mint runs: Denver's 3,280,000 pieces, the very high 5,360,000-piece New Orleans output, and the lower 1,644,828-piece San Francisco run. The modest Philadelphia mintage does not give the 1908 any Semi-Key standing on standard catalogs, but it sits as one of the smaller parent-Mint runs in the four-mint stretch of the series.

Strike on the 1908 is generally clean by Barber half standards. Liberty's hair detail above the ear and the wreath leaves on the cap render with adequate definition for grading, and the eagle's leg feathers carry full separation on most well-struck examples. The LIBERTY headband functions as the standard grade indicator, with the letters L and I wearing first; their full presence supports an AU45 or finer assignment. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations cluster through the circulated range from Good through AU58, with a workable Mint State shelf through MS63 and a thinning population above MS64. The gap between MS64 and MS65 pricing widens for the date because the issue saw heavy commercial release at the time of striking. Authentication is routine: 12.50 g weight, 30.6 mm diameter, reeded edge. Cherrypickers' Guide attributes no major varieties for the issue, and standard die-pair output applies throughout.

The 1908 sits as a routine Philadelphia issue in circulated grades but becomes a meaningful condition consideration in the gem Mint State range. Year-set and type-set collectors absorb most of the supply at moderate premiums, with the date functioning as the Philadelphia anchor in a 1908 four-mint set across the P, D, O, and S issues. A realistic acquisition path runs from a problem-free XF45 through an MS63 or MS64 certified example, with prices stepping up sharply above MS64 for registry-set buyers. Above MS65 the supply thins enough that competitive bidding applies at most major auctions.
