About this coinHistory

The Denver Mint struck 3,280,000 Barber halves in 1908, the third-year D-mintmarked output for the half-dollar denomination after the 4,028,000-piece inaugural 1906-D and the 3,856,000-piece 1907-D. The D mintmark sits above the eagle's tail feathers on the reverse in the standard Barber-half location. The 1908-D fell into commerce alongside Philadelphia's 1,354,000-piece run, the very high 5,360,000-piece New Orleans output, and San Francisco's lower 1,644,828-piece total. The Denver figure for 1908 ran slightly below the prior year, reflecting routine demand-driven production adjustments rather than any policy shift at the branch mint.

Strike quality on the 1908-D remained strong, continuing the pattern that defined Denver's first three years of Barber half work. The dies showed the expected wear progression of a third-year operation, but Liberty's hair detail above the ear, the wreath leaves on the cap, and the eagle's leg feathers still carry strong definition on most well-struck examples. The LIBERTY headband reads cleanly through the AU grades. PCGS and NGC populations populate the date well through the circulated grades and the mid-Mint State range, with the usual thinning shelf above MS64 where bag-mark contact begins to limit truly gem-level survivors. Authentication runs the standard checks: 12.50 g weight, 30.6 mm diameter, reeded edge. The added-D deception is far less of a concern for a routine Denver issue than for the high-premium S-mint Barber halves, but a careful eye on the punch position and font is worth running for any premium-grade purchase. Cherrypickers' Guide attributes no major varieties for the date.

The 1908-D sits firmly in the common-date tier of Barber halves on raw mintage grounds. Year-set and type-set collectors absorb most of the supply at moderate premiums, with the date also serving as the Denver anchor in a 1908 four-mint set. The strike-quality strength relative to the contemporary New Orleans and San Francisco issues makes a certified MS63 or MS64 a satisfying choice for collectors who want a sharply struck representative coin without paying gem-level prices. A problem-free XF45 through AU58 example trades for modest premiums above silver melt, and the date represents a reliable starting point for new Barber half collectors.
