The 1807 Large Stars 50/20 is one of the most celebrated blunder varieties in the entire United States silver coinage. A reverse die was punched with 50 C. directly over a previously stamped 20 C., a holdover from the 1796 to 1807 quarter eagle gold reverse that engraver John Reich and his colleagues had been working with concurrently. The error went uncaught and the die went into production, leaving the bottom of the 2 clearly visible underneath the 5, and the 0 of 20 still readable to the right of the C. The 1807 issue carries the shared 750,500 mintage across all dies, with 50/20 examples accounting for a healthy portion of survivors because the die saw extended use. The mistake captures the improvisational reality of the early Philadelphia Mint, where reverse dies from various denominations were repurposed when stocks ran short.
Authentication is straightforward when the diagnostic is intact. The remnants of the 20 must be visible at the bottom of the 50 C. legend, with the lower curve of the 2 protruding below the 5 and the underlying 0 detectable. Genuine pieces weigh 13.48 grams within tolerance and measure 32.5 mm in diameter, with the lettered edge reading FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR. Overton attribution covers multiple die states; late-state examples show progressive die wear that can obscure the 20 evidence. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) both attribute this variety on holders when requested. Beware tooled or chemically enhanced examples where the underlying digits have been artificially deepened.
The 50/20 has enjoyed type-coin demand for over a century because it tells a vivid story that non-specialists can see at a glance. Circulated examples are obtainable; problem-free Extremely Fine pieces command strong premiums; Mint State survivors are condition rarities.
