About this coinHistory

The 1808/7 overdate is the first overdate variety in the Capped Bust half dollar series and a foundational rarity for any specialist building a complete date-and-variety set. An obverse die originally punched with a 7 for 1807 production was repurposed for 1808 by overpunching the final digit with an 8, leaving traces of the underlying 7 visible inside and below the 8. The variety carries no separate mintage figure; it is included in the overall 1,368,600 piece total for 1808 production at the Philadelphia Mint. John Reich's Capped Bust design was barely two years old, and the Mint's habit of squeezing every workable die into service produced exactly the kind of frugal overdate that collectors now chase. The 1808/7 is the only overdate of its year and one of only a handful of true overdates across the entire Bust half run from 1807 through 1836.

Authentication centers on the overdate diagnostic. The underlying 7 should be visible as a curved tail running through the lower loop of the 8, with the top of the 7 sometimes detectable inside the upper loop depending on die state. Genuine pieces weigh 13.48 grams within tolerance and measure 32.5 mm in diameter, with the lettered edge reading FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR. Late-die-state examples can show diminished overdate evidence; early-state pieces show the clearest 7 remnants. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) both attribute 1808/7 on holders, and the variety is widely recognized in the trade.

Survivors run heaviest in lower circulated grades, with Fine and Very Fine examples readily available at strong premiums over a common 1808. Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated pieces are scarce; Mint State coins are condition rarities. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers track high-grade appearances reliably, and original gray patina with undisturbed surfaces consistently outperforms cleaned or dipped pieces at the same nominal grade. For broader background on the design, see the Capped Bust Half Dollar series history.
