About this coinHistory

The 1809 Capped Bust half dollar continued the production ramp of the Philadelphia Mint's redesigned silver fifty-cent piece, with reported mintage of 1,405,810 pieces and a substantial number of Overton-cataloged die marriages. By the third year of John Reich's design, the engraving staff had settled into routine, and 1809 strikes are generally crisper than the 1807 first-year coins. The obverse carries Liberty facing left in a mob cap with thirteen stars around the periphery and the date below. The reverse holds the heraldic eagle with shield on chest, an olive branch and three arrows in the talons, the E PLURIBUS UNUM banner above, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA paired with 50 C. circling the rim. The year is notable not for a single dramatic variety but for the unusual edge-lettering experiments that produced the III Edge and XXX Edge sub-varieties, treated separately. The mainstream 1809 with standard lettered edge is widely collected as a type representative.

Authentication runs through the standard Bust half diagnostic checklist. Genuine pieces weigh 13.48 grams within mint tolerance and measure 32.5 mm in diameter, with the lettered edge reading FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR. The edge lettering is applied with a Castaing machine prior to striking; uneven or doubled edge lettering on an otherwise normal coin can indicate one of the edge sub-varieties rather than damage. Overton attribution covers each of the year's die marriages. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) regularly attribute key varieties when collectors request it at submission. Inspect closely for old cleanings; original toning brings significant premiums.

Circulated 1809 examples are widely available across most grades, while gem Mint State pieces are condition rarities sought by registry collectors. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers handle 1809 halves with regularity, and original-skin pieces with attractive gray toning consistently bring the strongest auction results.
