About this coinHistory

The 1809 XXX Edge sits alongside the III Edge as the second collected edge sub-variety from the 1809 Capped Bust half dollar production at the Philadelphia Mint. In place of the standard ornamental punctuation devices that separate phrases of FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR on a normal lettered edge, the XXX Edge carries triple-X devices that look distinctly different from any other Bust half edge work. Like the III Edge, the change came from edge-lettering experimentation by Mint staff, and the XXX configuration appears on a portion of 1809 production with no separate mintage; the variety is counted within the year's 1,405,810 piece total. John Reich's obverse and reverse remain the standard 1809 designs, so authentication and identification depend entirely on careful edge inspection rather than face devices.

Authentication is an edge-only exercise. The XXX devices should appear as clean, raised triple-X figures placed between the lettered phrases, consistent in geometry around the entire circumference. Genuine pieces weigh 13.48 grams within mint tolerance and measure 32.5 mm in diameter, with the lettered edge still reading FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR underneath the XXX punctuation. Wear can make XXX devices look like worn ornaments from a standard edge; reference Overton plate photographs of the edge before paying a premium. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) attribute XXX Edge on certified holders, and holders with edge-view windows are the safest way to confirm the diagnostic without breaking out the coin.

The XXX Edge is scarce but obtainable at most major Bust half offerings, with Fine through Very Fine pieces showing up most often and higher grades genuinely difficult to locate. Pricing follows the III Edge closely. Both edge sub-varieties pair naturally for collectors building a focused study of the 1809 production year and the experimental edge work that briefly distinguished it from the standard Bust half edge. For broader background on the design, see the Capped Bust Half Dollar series history.
