The 1809 III Edge is one of two collected edge sub-varieties from the 1809 Capped Bust half dollar production at the Philadelphia Mint and a fascinating window into the experimental edge-lettering work done that year. Instead of the standard ornamental devices that punctuate the FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR legend on regular Bust halves, the III Edge variety substitutes a distinct III-style device between phrases. The change appears to have been a minor experiment by the Mint's edge-lettering staff using a modified Castaing machine collar, and only a portion of 1809 production received it. There is no separate mintage figure; III Edge examples are counted within the broader 1,405,810 piece 1809 total. John Reich's design on the faces is unchanged from any other 1809, so the variety must be authenticated by examining the edge alone, which makes it a slow find at coin shows where dealers display coins in face-up holders.
Authentication begins and ends with the edge. The III-shaped devices between the lettered phrases should be clean, raised, and consistent in geometry around the circumference. Genuine pieces weigh 13.48 grams and measure 32.5 mm in diameter, with the underlying lettered edge still reading FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR. Be wary of damaged or worn ornaments on a standard coin being misidentified as III devices; consult Overton plate photographs of the edge for a clear reference. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) both attribute III Edge when submitted with the appropriate notation, and certified holders with edge windows let buyers verify the diagnostic without removing the coin.
The III Edge is scarce across all grades, with Fine through Very Fine the most encountered range. Higher grades exist but are seldom offered. For broader background on the design, see the Capped Bust Half Dollar series history.
