The 1817/3 Capped Bust half dollar is one of two recognized overdates from the resumption year following the Philadelphia Mint fire, and it sits among the most visually obvious die corrections in the entire series. After production of half dollars halted in 1815, the Mint pressed unused dies back into service when coinage resumed in 1817, and engravers overpunched the final digit on dies originally prepared for earlier years. The result is a clear 7 cut directly over an underlying 3, with the loop of the older numeral visible inside the upper portion of the 7. Surviving examples vary in how distinctly the underdigit shows, since later die states polished away some of the underlying detail, but well-preserved coins display the overdate without need for magnification.
The variety carries the standard 89.24 percent silver composition shared across every John Reich Capped Bust half dollar, with weights centering on 13.48 grams and diameters of 32.5 millimeters. The lettered edge bears the FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR inscription, and edge details should appear crisp on genuine pieces. The 1817/3 is cataloged as Overton O-101, and attribution relies on confirming the underdigit, die crack patterns documented in Overton-Parsley, and obverse star positioning. Authentication of higher-grade pieces also examines the reverse die for specific feather details on the eagle and the spacing of letters in the legend. Cleaned and altered date counterfeits exist, particularly attempts to fabricate the overdate from a regular 1817, so weight verification combined with die-marker comparison is essential before committing to a purchase.
Collector demand for the 1817/3 has remained steady because the variety is recognized by major grading services and listed in standard references including the Red Book. Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers handle examples regularly, with PCGS and NGC population data showing the issue is genuinely scarce in About Uncirculated and very rare in Mint State. Most surviving pieces grade Very Good through Very Fine, where original gray patina commands strong premiums over cleaned surfaces. The 1817/3 is less famous than the punctuated date but more readily available than the 1817/4, making it the most attainable of the dramatic 1817 overdates.
