The 1817/4 Capped Bust half dollar is the rarest recognized variety of the 1817 year and one of the great rarities of the entire Capped Bust half dollar series. Only a small group of examples are known to exist, with most major numismatic references citing approximately ten to eleven examples across all grades combined. The overdate was created when an engraver punched a 7 over an underlying 4 on a working die originally cut for 1814, then placed the die into service after coinage resumed in 1817. The crossbar of the underlying 4 remains visible just below and through the loop of the 7, and the unmistakable diagnostic is what separates this issue from the more available 1817/3 overdate. Because so few examples survive, every confirmed appearance at auction draws significant attention.
The coin shares the standard John Reich Capped Bust specifications, with 89.24 percent silver content, a weight of 13.48 grams, a diameter of 32.5 millimeters, and the FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR lettered edge inscription applied prior to striking. The variety is cataloged as Overton O-102a, and attribution requires careful examination of the underdigit under magnification to confirm the horizontal crossbar of the 4. Die markers documented in the Overton-Parsley reference, including specific obverse cracks and reverse clash marks, provide additional points of comparison. Because the issue is so rare and counterfeits exist, authentication by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) or Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) is the standard expectation for any market transaction, and weight verification against the 13.48 gram standard is the first filter against cast fakes.
Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers have recorded auction appearances of 1817/4 examples in major collections, with realized prices climbing into the six-figure range for higher-grade survivors. Most known examples grade in the Good through Very Fine range, and any piece above Extremely Fine is considered exceptional. The combined PCGS and NGC certified population reflects the issue's extreme scarcity, and original problem-free surfaces command dramatic premiums over cleaned or damaged coins. The 1817/4 represents one of the holy grail acquisitions for advanced Capped Bust half dollar collectors and rarely enters the market outside of major auction venues.
