About this coinHistory

The 1820 20-over-19 with Curl Base 2 brings together two of the most studied features of the early Capped Bust half dollar series in a single die marriage. The overdate occurred when a working die originally prepared for 1819 was repunched with a new final digit, leaving the underlying 9 visible beneath the 0 on well-preserved examples. Pairing this overdate punch with the Curl Base 2 logotype, where the bottom of the 2 finishes in a rounded curl rather than a flat horizontal stroke, produced a narrow population of survivors that early-half-dollar specialists have tracked since the nineteenth century. John Reich's Capped Bust design had been in circulation since 1807, and by 1820 the Philadelphia Mint was using multiple obverse logotype punches in the same calendar year, which explains why one date can carry several distinct numeral families.

Authentic examples weigh 13.48 grams on a planchet of 89.24 percent silver, measure 32.5 millimeters across, and carry the lettered edge inscription FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR rolled into the planchet before striking. Attribution rests on Overton plate matching: collectors compare obverse die cracks, star positions, and the exact contour of the recut digit against published references, then confirm the Curl Base 2 by checking that the lower terminal of the 2 sweeps inward in a small hook. Counterfeits and altered-date pieces appear on the market with some regularity, so weight, edge lettering quality, and the die-state behavior of the underlying 9 inside the 0 all factor into authentication. Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) both encapsulate this variety with full Overton numbers on their labels.

Demand among Bust half collectors runs deepest for high-grade circulated pieces where the overdate remains clearly visible without aggressive die wear. Auction results show strong premiums above common 1820 die marriages, particularly in Very Fine and Extremely Fine grades.
