About this coinHistory

The 1820 20-over-19 with Square Base 2 occupies a narrow niche within an already complex date. The overdate punch is identical in concept to the Curl Base sister variety, with a final digit driven into a die originally cut for 1819, but the obverse logotype carries the alternate numeral style in which the base of the 2 ends in a flat, horizontal stroke rather than a hook. That seemingly small difference reflects the Philadelphia Mint's reliance on multiple punches during a single calendar year, and it is the cleanest visual cue separating two Overton-listed marriages that share the same overdate origin. Survivors of this combination are scarcer than common 1820 die pairs but more available than the rarest reverse types of the year.

Genuine pieces meet the standard early-half-dollar specifications of 13.48 grams, 32.5 millimeters, and 89.24 percent silver, with the lettered edge reading FIFTY CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR applied by the Castaing machine before the obverse and reverse dies struck the planchet. Attribution requires careful Overton plate matching, starting with the underlying 9 inside the 0 of the date, then moving to the lower terminal of the 2 to verify the square base. Star positions, die cracks, and the relationship of the date to the bust truncation refine the marriage. Both Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) catalog this combination by its Overton number, and population reports separate it cleanly from the Curl Base counterpart so registry collectors can target one or the other.

Pricing tracks closely with the Curl Base 2 overdate in mid grades, though some auction cycles favor one die marriage over the other depending on the strength of recent offerings. Extremely Fine and About Uncirculated examples bring meaningful premiums when the overdate remains sharp and the field surfaces are original. To place this die marriage inside the broader story of John Reich's design and the variety-rich years between 1807 and 1836, see our Capped Bust Half Dollar series history.
