About this coinHistory

The 1964-D D/D Repunched Mintmark is a different class of die error than the three obverse doubled-die varieties also catalogued for this date. Through 1989, mintmarks were added to each individual working die by hand using a mintmark punch struck with a mallet, separate from the hub-transfer process that placed the date and design. When the punch struck a working die a second time at a slightly offset position, the result is a secondary D outline ghosting beside, above, or inside the primary mintmark. Several die marriages with repunched D mintmarks are recognized for the 1964 Denver run, and PCGS and NGC will note RPM attribution on the holder. The base coin is a 1964-D struck in 90% silver at 12.50 g (0.36169 oz of fine silver), and the 156,205,446 mintage figure is the combined 1964-D total covering all die marriages, not a separate count for this variety.

Authentication on RPMs runs straightforward compared with the doubled-die varieties of the same date because the diagnostic sits in a single, predictable location: the mintmark area below the eagle's tail feathers on the reverse, in the standard D position. Under 10x, look for a distinct secondary D outline offset from the primary D, with the secondary impression typically lighter and only partially filled in where the second punch did not fully obliterate the first. Avoid mistaking die deterioration or filled metal flow at the mintmark for a true repunch; a real RPM shows clean, separated D outlines, not a fattened blob. PCGS or NGC certification with RPM designation should accompany any purchase at variety premium because raw seller claims again carry low market weight without slab attribution.

As a collecting target, the 1964-D D/D Repunched Mintmark is the most accessible of the four 1964-D variety entries, both in supply terms and in price. Roll searchers still occasionally turn up a candidate, and the cherrypick path runs comparatively friendly because the diagnostic is in one place and easy to photograph. Circulated certified examples carry a modest premium over a base 1964-D; Mint State certified pieces step up further, with gem grades from MS65 upward the area where the variety premium begins to compound on top of the base condition premium.
