The 1973-S Kennedy proof is the third cupronickel clad proof in the post-silver run and one of the lower-mintage years of the early 1970s San Francisco proof program. Composition follows the post-1971 standard: outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core, finished weight 11.34 g, no silver content. Mintage of 2,760,339 dipped roughly half a million below the 1972-S figure and supplied the 1973 Proof Set, the last conventional Kennedy proof before the run paused for the dual-dated Bicentennial reverse that ran from 1975 production into 1976. Roberts's portrait and Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse carry through unchanged, and the S mintmark below the bust was hand-punched per die in the manner standard through this period. The circulation Kennedys of the year are routine Philadelphia and Denver business strikes with no recognized varieties on either side.
What collectors look for on the 1973-S is Cameo and Deep Cameo contrast. Cameo refers to the visual contrast between mirrored proof fields and frosted devices, produced when freshly sandblasted dies struck their first several hundred coins before the frost coverage softened. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, designates these as CAM, with the strongest contrast graded DCAM (Deep Cameo). Cameo and DCAM examples are common on this date, with PR69 DCAM survival healthy. The gating constraint at the top of the certified population is mirror-field preservation rather than original cameo population: hairlines from handling, haze from cellophane storage, and small contact marks in the open fields around Kennedy's portrait set the realistic ceiling on most pieces. Authentication runs through the weight standard, where 11.34 g separates the cupronickel proof cleanly from the 11.50 g silver-clad proofs of 1968 to 1970 and from any later silver-recipe proof. The S mintmark below the bust occasionally shows minor positioning differences from die to die, none with attached premium.
In the collecting landscape the 1973-S is a low-friction acquisition and one of the easier links in a registered set of cupronickel proofs from 1971 through 1978. Standard PR68 examples are common and inexpensive, with the meaningful pricing tier at PR69 and PR70 DCAM where mirror-field preservation gates supply rather than cameo origin. A TPG slab protects the mirror surface and provides the cameo designation that raw examples can only suggest. The 1973-S has no individual scarcity premium, but the moderately lower mintage relative to 1971-S, 1972-S, and 1974-S gives the date a slight structural edge for collectors building a continuous PR69 DCAM run through the era.
