Composition is the standard cupronickel clad introduced in 1971: 75% copper and 25% nickel in the outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, weight 11.34 g, diameter 30.6 mm, reeded edge. No P mintmark appears on the obverse, since Philadelphia did not add its letter to halves until 1980. Roberts's GR initials sit at Kennedy's neck truncation, with Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse carrying FG to the right of the tail feathers. The 1974 reverse type would not appear again on a Kennedy half until 1977 once the Bicentennial run concluded.

Strike characteristics follow the cupronickel pattern established by 1971-1973, with central hair detail above Kennedy's ear and breast feathers on the eagle the recurring weak points, plus bag-mark concentration on the cheek and jawline that marks every early clad year. The 1974 itself carries no major catalogued obverse or reverse die variety, so authentication is straightforward: confirm a no-mintmark coin of the correct weight and composition. The companion 1974-D production includes a recognized Doubled Die Obverse variety visible on LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST, but no comparable Philadelphia variety is currently catalogued. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company, populations show the 1974 common through MS65 and thinning at MS66 and above, with well-struck gems with clean cheeks earning premium against routine survivors.

Within the series, the 1974 functions as a routine common date with a structural anchor as the last pre-Bicentennial Philadelphia issue. Year-set and type-set buyers pick it up raw at minimal premium over face in any grade through MS65, and certification matters only at MS66 and above where condition-rarity drives the spread.
