About this coinHistory

The Philadelphia Bicentennial half was one of three dual-dated 1776-1976 commemoratives the Mint produced for the United States' 200th anniversary, alongside the Bicentennial quarter and Bicentennial Eisenhower dollar. Production ran from mid-1975 through December 1976, and every Kennedy half struck during that window carried the dual date; no 1975-dated Kennedys exist as a result. Roberts's Kennedy obverse remained, but Frank Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse was set aside in favor of Seth Huntington's Independence Hall design, with INDEPENDENCE HALL below the building and 200 YEARS OF FREEDOM along the upper rim. Huntington, a Minneapolis-area illustrator, won the Treasury's open competition over hundreds of submissions. Philadelphia delivered 234,308,000 pieces of this coin in standard cupronickel clad (75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers over a pure copper core, 11.34 g, 30.6 mm).

Bicentennial halves remain among the most readily encountered modern U.S. commemoratives, with circulated examples turning up routinely in coin jars and bank rolls fifty years after release. Mint State coins are nearly as common, since broken Bicentennial three-coin sets and original 1976 Uncirculated Coin Sets continue to flood the supply. The grading challenge is condition, not availability. Independence Hall's broad open fields show contact marks easily, and Kennedy's high-relief cheek collects the same bag scuffs that have plagued the design since 1964. Gem MS65 examples are routine, but MS66 cleans up noticeably and PCGS- or NGC-graded MS67 pieces, the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company being the two dominant third-party graders, are scarce enough to bring real premiums.

For year-set and type-set collectors the 1976 Philadelphia is a common-date placeholder, valuable for the design rather than the mintmark. Roll hunters still find them; uncirculated rolls sell at modest premiums over face. The serious collecting angle is high grade. A solid MS66 with full cartwheel luster and clean cheek runs into the low three figures, and an MS67 trades well above that. Authentication concerns are minimal at this date and composition, since the coin holds little intrinsic value. For the broader story of Roberts and Gasparro's design, the Bicentennial reverse, and the series' production arc, see the Kennedy Half Dollar series history.
