The 1979 Philadelphia half is the last no-mintmark Kennedy from the main coinage facility, ending a fifteen-year stretch where Philadelphia output carried no identifier while every other minor U.S. denomination already showed the P mark on adjacent denominations. The P mintmark would appear on Philadelphia halves beginning 1980, completing the Treasury's gradual rollout of mint identifiers across the cent through dollar denominations. Mintage came in at 68,312,000 pieces, a significant rebound from the 1977 and 1978 lows that reflected briefly renewed Federal Reserve orders rather than recovered commercial demand. Composition remained the post-1971 cupronickel clad standard: 75% copper and 25% nickel outer layers over a pure copper core, 11.34 g total at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. Roberts's Kennedy obverse and Gasparro's heraldic eagle reverse continued without alteration.
Strike quality on the 1979 runs better than the 1977 or 1978 Philadelphia issues, possibly because the higher production volume justified more frequent die replacement and reduced the proportion of late-die-state pieces in the output. Kennedy's hair above the ear and the eagle's central shield lines come up cleanly on most certified examples. The grading ceiling remains contact-mark concentration on the high-relief portrait, particularly the cheek and jawline, where mint-bag handling left the marks that drop a coin from MS66 to MS65 or below. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, has graded a steady population through MS66 but reports a relatively thin MS67 count compared to other late-1970s Philadelphia Kennedys. The 1979 also functions as the bookend Philadelphia date for any collector building a no-mintmark Kennedy set spanning 1964 through 1979.
For collectors this issue reads as a common date in low Mint State and a moderate condition challenge at MS67. Type-set buyers building a no-mintmark Philly Kennedy can find clean MS65 examples at single-digit premiums to face. Year-set builders pair this coin with the 1979-D Denver. Authentication concerns are negligible at this composition. The collecting interest concentrates at MS67, where original-skin pieces with clean cheeks and full cartwheel luster trade in the mid three figures at major-house auction. Uncirculated rolls from the era still surface periodically.
