About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 3,010,497 Kennedy half dollar proofs in 1986, one of the lower figures of the 1980-1991 clad proof run and the second-lowest behind only the 1991-S close-out year. 1986 was the year of the Statue of Liberty centennial, marked by a separate three-coin commemorative program (clad half, silver dollar, gold five) that drew significant collector dollars and Mint attention; the standard Kennedy proof set continued on its routine schedule alongside that commemorative push. The Liberty commemorative half itself is a separate Statue of Liberty issue, not a Kennedy, and shares no design or production line with the date here. Composition follows the standard post-1971 recipe used across all proof and circulation Kennedys of the period: 75% copper and 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 grams at 30.6 millimeters, with a reeded edge. The S mintmark sits above the date on the obverse, and Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation of Kennedy's neck with Gasparro's FG to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse.

What collectors actually chase on the 1986-S is Cameo and Deep Cameo contrast rather than the basic proof finish. Cameo, abbreviated CAM on slabs from PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and from NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company, refers to the visual effect where the mirrored fields stay glassy black while the frosted devices read matte white under angled light. Deep Cameo, or DCAM, is the strongest version of that contrast. By 1986 DCAM had become the production norm on fresh proof dies, so the contrast hunt at this date sits in the upper PR69 and PR70 tiers rather than at the basic cameo level. Diagnostics worth checking under good light include the depth of frost on Kennedy's hair flow above the ear, the matte texture on the eagle's chest feathers, and the unbroken mirror field around the motto lettering. Original packaging is the 1986 Proof Set sleeve, often surfacing alongside Liberty commemorative product packaging in collector estates from the period.

For collecting purposes the 1986-S sits as the lowest-mintage 1980s clad proof and as a quiet condition target at PR70 DCAM, where the relatively thinner production base contributes to a slimmer top-grade census than adjacent 1987-S or 1988-S issues show. Pricing in basic certified grades runs with the broader 1980s tier and offers little separation between dates, but the PR70 DCAM census matters for registry-set competitors building the full S-mint clad run. Type collectors filling a mid-1980s slot can buy the 1986-S raw from intact proof sets at modest premium and submit only the strongest-contrast example for certification. The Statue of Liberty centennial sat parallel to this issue rather than influencing it.
