About this coinHistory

Denver struck 15,054,678 Kennedy halves for circulation in 1991, slightly above Philadelphia's 14,874,000 the same year and continuing the gradual decline in business-strike output that began after the 20-million-plus 1989 and 1990 runs. The 1991 mintages are the last of a six-year cluster of routine clad Kennedy production before the 1992 introduction of the Silver Proof Set marked a structural shift in how the Mint packaged the denomination for collectors. Composition holds at the standard cupronickel clad introduced in 1971, with outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel over a pure copper core, 11.34 grams at 30.6 millimeters, reeded edge. The D mintmark sits low on the obverse to the right of the neck truncation. No major die varieties are recognized for the date, and production was routine across the year.

Strike quality on the 1991-D continues Denver's pattern of running slightly tighter dies than Philadelphia on Kennedy production for the era, with hair detail above Kennedy's ear coming in marginally sharper on average and eagle feather definition holding through more of the die run before softening. The standard condition issues apply: cheek bag marks on the high-relief obverse, reverse rim ticks from bag and roll handling, and occasional die-state weakness on end-of-run strikes. The cupronickel alloy's cool bright finish throws surface contact into sharper visual relief than the older silver compositions did, complicating gem certification. Authentication is essentially a non-issue at this date because the coin holds no melt value and the modern clad construction resists counterfeiting. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company, populations stay deep through MS65 and routine into MS66, then thin sharply at MS67, where original-roll luster and clean fields drive significant price separation.

The 1991-D fills its slot in any Kennedy date-and-mintmark set as a routine common-date purchase, generally bought raw or as a low-cost certified gem. Bank-roll searches still produce 1991-D examples for collectors working brick rolls direct from cooperative banks, with the 15-million mintage placing the date in the same accessibility range as its 1991-P mate. Mint-set examples and bank-wrapped uncirculated rolls remain the cleanest raw material for collectors aiming at gem grade without paying for certification. Premium activity concentrates at MS67 and above, where registry-set demand drives the meaningful price activity; routine MS65 trades at minimal numismatic premium over face. Pricing has been flat for decades in lower grades. For the broader story of the modern Kennedy half dollar and the series' production arc, see the Kennedy Half Dollar series history.
