San Francisco struck 2,633,439 cupronickel-clad Kennedy proofs for the 1993 standard Proof Set, with the parallel silver proof catalogued separately under the second-year Silver Proof Set program. The 1993-S clad mintage came in below 1992-S, a modest step down consistent with the slow erosion in standard-set demand as collectors split their dollars between the clad set and the silver set introduced the prior year. Composition follows the post-1971 recipe: 75% copper, 25% nickel outer clad over a pure copper core at 11.34 g and 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The S mintmark sits above the date on the obverse, with Gilroy Roberts's GR initials at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse. Production used polished proof dies on burnished planchets, the standard San Francisco proof process by this point in the series.
The collector hunt on this issue centers on Cameo and Deep Cameo contrast. Cameo describes the visual effect when mirrored fields stay glassy and devices hold a frosted matte appearance, the result of freshly prepared sandblasted dies producing crisp white-on-black contrast. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, designates these as CAM and the strongest examples as DCAM (Deep Cameo). NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company, uses Cameo and Ultra Cameo for the same finish categories. By the early 1990s the Mint's proof-die preparation produced full cameo or deep cameo contrast on the bulk of San Francisco output, so PR69 DCAM is the working baseline for the issue rather than a condition rarity. Diagnostics under angled light include frost coverage on Kennedy's hair, depth of mirror in the date field, and the eagle's chest feathers. Authentication is not a meaningful concern at this composition and date because modern cupronickel proofs are not commercial counterfeit targets.
The 1993-S clad proof functions as a low-cost year-set or type-set placeholder, with original Proof Set packaging widely available and PR69 DCAM examples plentiful in the certified market. PR70 DCAM commands a modest premium over PR69, but absolute pricing remains well within reach for set builders. Below the gem cameo level there is no numismatic interest, and raw examples trade essentially at issue price. The issue's collecting position is structural rather than scarcity-driven: a standard clad proof in the second year of the bifurcated clad-versus-silver proof program. For the broader story of the modern proof program and the series' production arc, see the Kennedy Half Dollar series history.
