About this coinHistory

Denver edged Philadelphia in the 1994 production race, with 23,828,110 Kennedy halves struck against the parent mint's 23,718,000. Both figures represented a meaningful step up from the 15-million-range mintages of 1992 and 1993, and the closely-matched P and D counts marked a return to the Mint's traditional pattern of running the two facilities at roughly parallel volume. Composition stayed with the standard post-1971 cupronickel clad specification: 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core at 11.34 g, 30.6 mm in diameter with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date on the obverse, sharply defined on the majority of pieces from the year. Roberts's GR initials remain at the neck truncation, with Gasparro's FG to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse.

Strike characteristics on the 1994-D show Denver's typical edge in central detail through the mid-1990s. Hair detail above the ear runs noticeably crisper on average than same-year Philadelphia output, the result of slightly different die preparation routines that produced sharper recess transfer. The eagle's central feathers and the arrow shafts remain the recurring grade-distribution problem zones for the modern series, with cheek and jaw bag marks the second filter for high-grade certification. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company, populations are heavily concentrated at MS65 and MS66 from cracked mint sets, with MS67 examples showing full strike and clean fields meaningfully scarcer. The condition-rarity gap between MS66 and MS67 carries the only significant pricing implication for the date, since raw and certified MS65 trade at minimal premium over face.

The 1994-D fits cleanly into year-set and type-set collecting at low cost, with original 1994 Mint Set rolls remaining the most efficient raw-source path to high-grade candidates. Certification matters only at MS67, where the population begins to thin and price climbs become meaningful. The 1994-D and 1994-P pair effectively for collectors building a Philadelphia-Denver high-grade duo, with the Denver issue providing the marginal strike-quality advantage at any given grade level. No key-date status, no recognized variety, no counterfeit concern; the issue is a workhorse of the mid-1990s clad run.
