About this coinHistory

The 1995-S Silver Proof holds the lowest mintage of the entire 1992 through 2005 silver Kennedy proof run at 679,985 pieces, the trough of the program's first decade. The figure sits below the 1993 second-year normalization and the 1994 baseline, reflecting a quiet stretch in Silver Proof Set demand before the late-1990s recovery. 1995 also happens to be the companion year to one of the most consequential modern American silver issues, the 1995-W proof Silver Eagle that was distributed only through the 10th Anniversary Silver Eagle Set; collectors hunting 1995 silver across denominations sometimes acquire this Kennedy at the same time. Composition follows the restored pre-1965 recipe of 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 g and 30.6 mm with a reeded edge, carrying 0.36169 troy ounces of actual silver weight.

Authentication is straightforward at this composition and date. The silver coin shows uniform silver reeding around the edge, while the cupronickel-clad version from the parallel 1995 Proof Set reveals a copper-colored line through the rim from its exposed core. The silver issue runs 1.16 g heavier than the clad. Cameo and Deep Cameo describe the contrast between mirrored proof fields and frosted devices, designated CAM and DCAM by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and Cameo and Ultra Cameo by NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company. By 1995 the Mint's proof-die preparation produced full deep cameo on essentially every San Francisco silver strike, so PR69 DCAM is the working baseline rather than a condition target. Surface concerns shift to milky haze on long-stored sets, hairline contact from broken packaging, and the rare contact mark on Kennedy's cheek.

As a collecting target the 1995-S silver proof carries a small premium over its 1992 through 2005 siblings on account of being the lowest-mintage entry in the run, but the premium is modest in absolute terms because the silver Kennedy series saw small enough mintages overall that no single date achieves real scarcity. PR69 DCAM trades at a measured step above bullion, with the meaningful price gap at PR70 DCAM where surface preservation separates technically identical coins under loupe inspection. Year-set builders working 1995 silver across denominations are the natural buyer pool, alongside type-set collectors needing one 90% silver Kennedy from the modern reintroduction era. Original red Silver Proof Set packaging surfaces frequently.
