About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 775,021 Kennedy half dollars in 90% silver for the 1996 Silver Proof Set, a modest recovery from the 1995 trough that marked the lowest mintage of the 1992 through 2005 silver run. The figure returns the program to the routine 700,000 to 900,000 range that characterized most of its first decade. The 1996 Mint product line also introduced the expanded P-D-W Uncirculated Mint Set covering the cent and dime, but the Kennedy half remained outside that expansion and continued to ship in two parallel proof formats only: the standard cupronickel-clad Proof Set and the separately sold Silver Proof Set carrying this coin. Composition follows the restored pre-1965 recipe of 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 g and 30.6 mm with a reeded edge, with 0.36169 troy ounces of actual silver weight.

What collectors check first on this issue is the edge. The silver coin shows uniform silver reeding all the way around, while the parallel cupronickel-clad 1996-S proof reveals a copper-colored line through the rim where the pure copper core meets the outer layers. Weight is the second test, with the silver issue running 12.50 g against the clad's 11.34 g for a 1.16 g difference detectable on any jeweler's scale. Cameo and Deep Cameo describe the contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, abbreviated CAM and DCAM by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and Cameo and Ultra Cameo by NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company. By 1996 the Mint's proof-die preparation produced full deep cameo on essentially every San Francisco silver strike. PR69 DCAM is the baseline of the certified market for the issue rather than a condition target.

As a collecting target the 1996-S silver proof trades in PR69 DCAM at a measured premium over melt, with the meaningful price step at PR70 DCAM where surface preservation under loupe inspection separates technically identical coins. Original red Silver Proof Set packaging surfaces regularly through dealer channels and online auction venues. Three buyer pools share the market: type-set collectors needing one 90% silver Kennedy from the modern reintroduction era, year-set builders working the 1996 issues, and bullion-aware collectors who hold the issue partly for its 0.36169 troy ounce silver content. The 775,021 mintage carries no scarcity premium relative to its silver siblings; supply tracks the silver-set collector base of the period and matches it well.
