About this coinHistory

Denver came in at 19,876,000 Kennedy halves in 1997, slightly below Philadelphia's 20,882,000 and continuing the step-down from the 24-to-26 million peaks of 1995 and 1996. Together the two figures put 1997 production roughly 18 percent below 1996, the sharpest single-year drop of the 1992-1998 stretch and a clear signal of the contraction that would accelerate into 1999. Composition followed the standard post-1971 cupronickel clad specification: 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core at 11.34 g, 30.6 mm in diameter with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date on the obverse, well-defined on most pieces from the year. Roberts's GR initials remain at the neck truncation and Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike characteristics on the 1997-D show Denver's familiar mid-to-late-1990s pattern of sharper central detail than same-year Philadelphia output. Hair waves above the ear and across the temple read crisply on the majority of pieces, and the eagle's central feathers and arrow bundles come up cleaner than the typical Philadelphia example. The cheek and jaw bag-mark concentration remains the standard MS66-to-MS67 filter for the entire modern series, and the 1997-D shows roughly typical contact-mark density for the period. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company, populations cluster densely at MS65 and MS66, with MS67 examples noticeably thinner. Counterfeit risk is zero at this composition, and authentication reduces to confirming the reeded edge and the layered rim construction of the cupronickel clad under magnification. The reeds run sharp and evenly spaced on Denver output of the period.

For collectors the 1997-D pairs naturally with the 1997-P for Philadelphia-Denver year-set work, with the Denver issue carrying the marginal strike-quality advantage at any given grade level. The acquisition path remains original 1997 Mint Set rolls, which produce a meaningful percentage of MS66 candidates and the occasional MS67. Certified MS67 pricing for 1997-D runs at the typical late-1990s level, modestly above 1995 and 1996 P/D issues because the smaller mintage compresses the eventual high-grade pool. No key-date status, no recognized variety, no counterfeit concern; the 1997-D is a workhorse common date with condition-rarity interest concentrated at the top of the grade scale.
