The 2000-D Kennedy half rolled out of Denver at 19,466,000 pieces, the high point of Denver's late-period circulation Kennedy output and a clear surge against the 10.7-million figure posted in 1999. The bounce reflects the Treasury rebuilding inventory for routine commercial distribution one final time before the policy change that ended general-circulation halves in 2002. Composition followed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG appears to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse.
Denver's strike quality on the 2000-D continues the half-step edge over Philadelphia that holds across the late 1990s and early 2000s. Hair detail above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers consistently come up cleaner on a Denver gem, and weak-strike examples are correspondingly rarer. The grade-cap problem remains the familiar Kennedy contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw from bag handling, with sorter-belt marks accounting for most of the difference between an MS66 and an MS67 candidate. Counterfeit concern is minimal at this composition. Authentication routine verifies a sharp D mintmark and the layered cupronickel rim under magnification. PCGS and NGC populations cluster heavily at MS65 and MS66, with MS67 examples scarce but more available than on the 1999-D thanks to the larger original-roll inventory the 19-million mintage produced.
For year-set collectors the 2000-D occupies the same transitional slot as the 2000-P: a coin that did genuinely circulate, the last of its kind from Denver before mint-set-only production took over. Raw examples sell at face through MS65, certified gems carry small premiums at MS66, and MS67 prices climb sharply. The acquisition path of choice is original 2000 Uncirculated Coin Set rolls, where cellophane packaging shielded coins from circulation contact and yielded a high percentage of gem-quality candidates. Bank-roll hunting still occasionally produces an MS66 or better example because the coin saw real distribution. Anyone building a complete Denver Kennedy date run will appreciate the 2000-D as the structural pivot point: every Denver Kennedy after it came out of mint-set packaging only.
