About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 1,125,755 Kennedy half dollars in 90% silver for the 2003 Silver Proof Set, the program's first crossing back over the million-piece mark since the 1992 inaugural year. The increase represents a real strengthening of Silver Proof Set demand mid-decade, driven in part by rising silver spot prices that began their multi-year climb in 2003 and the continued pull of the 50 State Quarters Program drawing buyers into the silver set product line. 2003 also marks the second year of the mint-set-only era for the half dollar broadly, with P and D circulation issues struck only for inclusion in annual Uncirculated Coin Sets and direct-from-Mint rolls. Composition on this silver proof follows the restored pre-1965 recipe of 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 g and 30.6 mm with a reeded edge, carrying 0.36169 troy ounces of actual silver weight.

Authentication separating the silver coin from its cupronickel-clad sibling in the standard 2003 Proof Set rests on three tests. Edge inspection shows uniform silver reeding on the silver issue and a copper-colored line through the clad rim from its exposed core. Weight runs 12.50 g for the silver and 11.34 g for the clad, a 1.16 g difference any small scale will detect. Specific gravity gives a final reading if needed. Cameo and Deep Cameo describe the contrast between mirrored proof fields and frosted devices, designated CAM and DCAM by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and Cameo and Ultra Cameo by NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company. By 2003 the Mint's proof-die preparation produced full deep cameo on essentially every San Francisco silver strike, so PR69 DCAM is the floor of the certified market for the issue rather than near its ceiling.

As a collecting target the 2003-S silver proof trades in PR69 DCAM at a measured premium over melt value, with the meaningful price step at PR70 DCAM where surface preservation under loupe inspection separates technically identical coins. Original Silver Proof Set packaging surfaces routinely. Three buyer pools share the market: type-set collectors needing one 90% silver Kennedy from the modern reintroduction era, year-set builders working 2003 issues across denominations (including the year's five State Quarter silver designs), and bullion-conscious collectors who hold the issue partly for its 0.36169 troy ounce silver content. The 1,125,755 mintage marks the demand rebound that defines the 2003 through 2005 stretch as the program's strongest three-year run. For the broader story of the silver proof program reintroduction and the series' production arc, see the Kennedy Half Dollar series history.
