About this coinHistory

The 2007-D Satin Finish Kennedy half is the Denver companion to the 2007-P Satin and the third-year Denver entry of the Satin Finish Mint Set program. Mintage at 895,628 matches Philadelphia exactly because each 2007 Satin Finish Mint Set held one P and one D piece, with production tied to Mint Set order count rather than independent facility demand. The figure shows a modest 48,000-piece recovery over 2006-D and sits in the upper half of the six-year Satin run. The regular 2007-D brilliant uncirculated half is a separate catalog entry from the standard Uncirculated Coin Set product line and should not be conflated with this issue. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core at 11.34 g, 30.6 mm, with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation, with Gilroy Roberts's GR initials at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse.

The Satin Finish surface is the authentication question for the 2007-D, as for the entire program. Under a single light source the surface reads as one uniform satiny sheet across both fields and devices, with no cartwheel rotation and no mirrored fields. Denver's strike pattern through the mint-set-only era runs marginally tighter than Philadelphia, and the satin surface preserves die-fresh detail on Kennedy's hair above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers cleanly, so a typical 2007-D Satin pulls SP68 grades more readily than its Philadelphia counterpart. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC label the slab insert as Satin Finish or SP, the Specimen designation. Original Mint Set cardboard inserts carry the Mint's finish attribution and remain the cheapest verification path on raw material. By the third program year the secondary market held enough loose Satin pieces that misattribution risk was a routine purchase consideration, and a quick comparison against any known reference resolves the question without controversy.

For Denver-set and year-set collectors the 2007-D Satin Finish is acquired through the 2007 Satin Finish Mint Set rather than the standard Uncirculated Coin Set, and the dual-product structure carries unchanged from 2005-2006. Raw examples in original Mint Set packaging trade at modest premiums above face value, with certified SP67 and SP68 examples carrying stronger premiums and SP69 the working ceiling for the date. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at SP67 and SP68 from broken sets, with Denver pieces showing marginally better strike-grade distribution than Philadelphia. The matched 895,628 P and D figures put the 2007 pair at parallel acquisition cost and at the same structural position in the six-year Satin run. A complete twelve-coin date-and-mint Satin Finish set tracks this pair as a routine middle-program acquisition with no special premium attached.
