The 2010-D Kennedy half is the regular business-strike Denver issue for the year and must be kept separate from the 2010-D Satin Finish piece that catalogues independently as part of the sixth and final Satin Finish Mint Set program. After 2010 the Mint discontinued the Satin Finish product line, making the 2010-D the last Denver Kennedy with a parallel Satin Finish counterpart. The regular 2010-D came out of the standard 2010 Uncirculated Coin Set in conventional brilliant uncirculated finish at 1,700,000 pieces, 100,000 below the Philadelphia figure for the year and a return to the 2008 low-water mark for Denver output. The figure tracks 2010 Mint Set order arithmetic and the small variance between P and D reflects bag and roll direct-sale residue at each facility. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.
Strike quality on the regular 2010-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example, dies are rotated before terminal wear, and cellophane packaging prevents the commercial handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild on most pieces. As with every 2005 through 2010 Kennedy, the most consequential authentication point at this date is finish identification: the regular 2010-D shows a standard brilliant uncirculated surface, while the Satin Finish 2010-D shows a uniform matte-like sheen across fields and devices. The two are routinely confused in raw transactions, and PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC both grade them as distinct issues that price independently. Verify the finish under a single light source before paying any premium on a raw example.
For year-set and Denver-set collectors the regular 2010-D is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2010 Uncirculated Coin Set, with the Satin Finish piece pursued separately through the final Satin Finish Mint Set when a collector wants both. Raw examples sell just above face value, with MS66 and MS67 carrying small premiums and MS68 effectively condition-rare. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never reached banks. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions. The 1.7-million Denver mintage paired with the 2010 closeout of the Satin Finish program makes the 2010-D structurally the last of a six-year era within the mint-set-only stretch, and a date-and-mint run through the 2005-2010 Satin Finish years carries twelve regular-side entries plus twelve more on the Satin side.
