The 2010-P Satin Finish Kennedy half is the sixth and final year of the Satin Finish Mint Set program that ran from 2005 through 2010. Mintage at 583,897 is the lowest figure in the six-year run, a 200,000-piece pullback from 2009. The Mint discontinued the Satin Finish format after the 2010 set and returned to a single regular brilliant uncirculated finish for the 2011 Uncirculated Coin Set, making the 2010-P the closing Satin issue from Philadelphia. The figure matches the 2010-D Satin Finish exactly because each Mint Set held one P and one D piece. The regular 2010-P brilliant uncirculated half is a separate catalog entry from the standard Uncirculated Coin Set product line and should not be conflated with this issue. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core at 11.34 g, 30.6 mm, with a reeded edge. The P mintmark sits above the date; Gilroy Roberts's GR initials are at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG appears to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.
Finish identification carries the authentication weight on the 2010-P Satin, as on every Satin Finish Kennedy. The surface reads as one uniform satiny sheet under a single light source, with no rotating cartwheel and no proof mirroring. The regular 2010-P brilliant uncirculated piece shows cartwheel luster as the coin tilts; the 2010-S proof shows mirrored fields with frosted devices; the Satin Finish surface resembles neither. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC label the slab insert as Satin Finish or SP, the Specimen designation, and original Mint Set cardboard inserts carry the Mint's finish attribution. The closing-year status raises a small additional consideration: any 2011 or later Kennedy offered as Satin Finish is automatically misattributed, because the Mint produced no Satin Finish coinage after 2010. The discontinuation makes the year a hard cutoff and any post-2010 Satin claim a flag for closer inspection.
For year-set collectors the 2010-P Satin Finish is acquired through the 2010 Satin Finish Mint Set rather than the standard Uncirculated Coin Set. Raw examples in original Mint Set packaging trade at modest premiums above face value, with certified SP67 and SP68 examples carrying stronger premiums and SP69 the working ceiling for the date. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at SP67 and SP68 from broken sets. The 583,897 mintage is the lowest of the six-year Satin run and roughly half the 2005 launch figure, though the count remains high enough that supply and demand meet at a small step above face value for raw material. For collectors building a complete twelve-coin Satin Finish date-and-mint set this pair closes the run and offers the lowest mintage entry, though not the scarcest one in practical acquisition terms.
