About this coinHistory

The 2011-D Kennedy half is the regular business-strike Denver issue for the year and the first post-Satin-Finish-era Denver Kennedy. With the 2010 closeout of the Satin Finish Mint Set program, the Mint returned to a single regular Mint State finish for the annual Uncirculated Coin Set, so the 2011-D catalogues as one entry per mint rather than the parallel pair structure that defined 2005 through 2010. The 2011-D came out of the standard 2011 Uncirculated Coin Set at 1,750,000 pieces, matching the Philadelphia figure for the year and continuing the matched P and D mintage pattern that defines the mint-set-only stretch. The identical count reflects mint-set production arithmetic: P and D halves are pulled in parallel quantities to populate the annual set. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the 2011-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example, dies are rotated before terminal wear, and cellophane packaging prevents the commercial handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild on most pieces. Counterfeiting is a non-issue at this composition. Authentication is routine for the cupronickel clad: verify a genuine reeded edge and the layered rim under magnification. The principal concern is identifying coins that have been pulled from mint sets and offered as Mint State raw, a problem that grows with each year of the mint-set-only stretch. The single-finish format from 2011 forward makes the catalog cleaner: any 2011-D offered as Satin Finish is misattributed because no such Mint product exists for the year.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the 2011-D is an inexpensive placeholder acquired through the standard mint-set extraction path: purchase the intact 2011 Uncirculated Coin Set and pull the half, which typically grades MS66 or MS67 from the cellophane. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never reached banks. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions, with MS68 effectively condition-rare. Raw examples sell just above face value. The 2011-D and its Philadelphia counterpart together mark the structural transition from the dual-finish 2005-2010 stretch to the single-finish 2011-forward stretch, simplifying the catalog by one entry per year and trimming the acquisition arithmetic for date-and-mint collectors building a complete 2002-2020 run.
