About this coinHistory

The 2012-D Kennedy half continues the mint-set-only era at 1,700,000 pieces, 100,000 below the Philadelphia figure for the year and a return to the 2010-D output level. The figure tracks 2012 Mint Set order arithmetic with the small variance between P and D mintages attributed to bag and roll direct-sale residue at each facility. The 2012-D sits in the middle of the single-finish stretch that ran from 2011 through the end of the mint-set-only era, with no parallel Satin Finish counterpart. The half remained a non-circulating product available only through the annual Uncirculated Coin Set and direct-sale roll programs. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the 2012-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example, dies are rotated before terminal wear, and cellophane packaging prevents the commercial handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild on most pieces. Counterfeiting is a non-issue at this composition and modern production date. Authentication is routine for the cupronickel clad: verify a genuine reeded edge and the layered rim under magnification. The principal practical concern is identifying coins that have been pulled from mint sets and offered as Mint State raw, a problem that compounds across the long mint-set-only stretch as the volume of broken-up sets in the secondary market grows.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the 2012-D is an inexpensive placeholder acquired through the standard mint-set extraction path: purchase the intact 2012 Uncirculated Coin Set and pull the half, which typically grades MS66 or MS67 from the cellophane. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never reached banks. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions, with MS68 effectively condition-rare. Raw examples sell just above face value. The 1.7-million Denver mintage holds the lower-output profile that defines the 2007-2012 range and pairs structurally with the 2008-D and 2010-D issues at identical output levels. For a complete date-and-mint run through the mint-set-only stretch, the 2012-D sits at parallel acquisition cost to the surrounding years and offers no premium concern, only a structural place in the longer arc.
